Child car seat

Start with your child and vehicle

Share your child's age, height and weight with the provider. Check the specific seat's limits and its compatibility with the vehicle you will use. Follow current manufacturer instructions and local legal requirements; do not select a seat from age alone.

Ask about the seat's history

  • What are the model name and manufacture date?
  • Is the seat within its stated useful life?
  • Has it been involved in a crash?
  • Has the provider checked for recalls and completed any required remedies?
  • Are all labels, parts and the instruction manual present?

If the history cannot be confirmed or parts are missing, do not assume the seat is suitable. NHTSA.gov provides car-seat guidance and recall resources.

Plan installation before arrival

Ask whether installation assistance is offered and who is responsible for installing the seat. Installation assistance is not automatically a certification. A certified child passenger safety technician can help check fit and use; find a local resource through Safe Kids or NHTSA.

Confirm the handoff and return

Coordinate the airport or rental-car location, meeting restrictions and pickup time. Confirm whether delivery and collection are included in the fee. A seat delivered to a hotel may not solve the trip from the airport.

Inspect before every trip

Review the manual, vehicle instructions, harness fit and installation. Never use an item with visible damage or an unresolved concern. This guide is a planning checklist, not individual installation or safety advice.
